Some places become part of your love story long before your wedding day. For Emily and Marlowe, the Philippines had already become that place.Nearly a decade after meeting through mutual friends while studying at the University of Technology Sydney, and years after a sunrise proposal atop a limestone cliff in El Nido, they found themselves standing on another Philippine shoreline, this time surrounded by 70 of the people they love most, exchanging vows in Boracay.Looking back, it's difficult for them to separate the destination from the memories they created there.<blockquote>"We always knew we wanted to get married in the Philippines," Marlowe says. Emily and Marlowe's story began in a way that many modern romances do — through friends.<blockquote>"We've known each other for about ten years," Marlowe recalls. "We met through a mutual friend during a pub crawl for her twenty-first birthday."</blockquote>Years later, during a holiday in El Nido, he suggested an early morning hike to Taraw Cliff.The climb began before dawn. By sunrise, they had reached the summit overlooking Bacuit Bay, where only a handful of travellers shared the breathtaking view.<blockquote>"That's when I proposed," he says. "It was just our guide and a few other people watching the sunrise."</blockquote>The engagement lasted longer than either of them expected. Life intervened. A global pandemic arrived. They built a home together. Wedding plans waited patiently in the background. But one thing never changed."We always knew we'd come back."

A Story That Started with a Sunrise

The couple had explored much of the Philippines together — Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor, Palawan — but choosing where to marry required thinking beyond themselves. Most of their guests would be travelling from Australia, many experiencing the Philippines for the very first time.<blockquote>"We wanted to bring our friends and family here because so many of them had never been," Emily says.</blockquote>Boracay offered something rare: spectacular scenery without asking guests to sacrifice convenience.<blockquote>"It was just much easier for everyone," Marlowe explains. "The flights, the accommodation, getting around—it made sense."</blockquote>What mattered most wasn't finding the most remote island. It was finding somewhere beautiful enough to leave a lasting impression, while making the journey feel effortless for the people making it with them.

Bringing Everyone to the Philippines

There was only one thing Emily knew she didn't want.<blockquote>"I didn't want to get married in front of everybody."</blockquote>Like many couples planning a Boracay wedding, she'd seen photographs of the bustling stations lined with visitors. Beautiful, certainly — but not how she imagined saying her vows. Instead, they searched for somewhere quieter. Somewhere that allowed the celebration to feel intimate. They discovered that feeling at Crimson Resort &amp; Spa Boracay.<blockquote>"What we wanted was somewhere that felt private," she says. "Somewhere that gave us our own little piece of the beach."</blockquote>For one afternoon, that's exactly what they found.

Finding a Place That Felt Like Their Own

Organising a destination wedding from Australia could easily have become overwhelming. Instead, Emily and Marlowe remember it as surprisingly uncomplicated.<blockquote>"We had lots of little questions," Marlowe laughs. "Accommodation, transport, timings... everything."</blockquote>Living in another country meant they couldn't simply visit the venue whenever they wanted. Every decision relied on conversations, emails and video calls.<blockquote>"The communication made a huge difference," he says. "Whenever there was something we didn't know, we'd get an answer. If they needed to check with another department, they'd come back to us."</blockquote>They especially appreciated how much freedom they had to personalise the celebration.<blockquote>"It wasn't just one package," Emily says. "We could choose the flowers, the tables, the cake—everything felt like it could reflect us."</blockquote>Rather than feeling like they were selecting items from a checklist, they felt involved in shaping the day.

Planning from Across the Ocean

When asked to describe their wedding, neither reaches for grand or extravagant words. Instead, they both smile.<blockquote>"Fun." "Casual."</blockquote>Those are the words that come most naturally. They skipped many of the formal traditions. There was no elaborate entourage, no rigid timeline, no pressure for perfection.<blockquote>"It wasn't super formal," Emily says. "We knew all of our guests really well."</blockquote>Hosting a gathering before the wedding also turned out to be one of their favourite decisions.<blockquote>"Everyone had already met before the wedding day," Marlowe explains. "It took away so much of the pressure because everyone already felt comfortable together."</blockquote>Instead of introducing strangers, they simply watched old friends and new friendships come together.

A Wedding That Felt Like Home

Ask most couples about their favourite wedding memory and they'll often choose the ceremony. Emily and Marlowe didn't. Without hesitation, they answer together."Cocktail hour."The ceremony had ended. The formalities were over. The Boracay sky softened into shades of gold and pink as the sun disappeared beyond the horizon.<blockquote>"It was the perfect timing," Marlowe remembers. "The sun had just set."</blockquote>What they remember most wasn't a photograph or a speech. It was everyone simply being there.<blockquote>"A lot of people told us afterwards they barely took any photos because they were just enjoying themselves."</blockquote>People danced. They laughed. They wandered between conversations. Children played barefoot on the grass while glasses clinked beneath the fading light. Their memories aren't stored in their camera rolls. They're carried in the feeling of that evening.

The Moment They Didn't Want to End

When the wedding was over, many of their guests shared the same thought. Several told them it was one of the most beautiful weddings they had ever attended. Emily smiles remembering those conversations. For her, though, what mattered wasn't creating an impressive event. It was creating an experience.Looking back only a week after returning to Australia, they don't talk first about flowers, styling or decorations. They remember a sunrise in El Nido. A sunset in Boracay. Friends who became part of a place they had long considered special. "The people who do weddings every day know what they're doing."</blockquote>Then, laughing, he adds one final practical tip.<blockquote>"If you're planning an afternoon beach ceremony in Boracay, definitely make sure your guests have plenty of shade."</blockquote>It's the kind of advice only newlyweds can give, equal parts heartfelt, honest and hard-earned. Perhaps that's what makes their story so memorable. Not because everything was perfect. But because everything important was.
